Polystyrene is widely used as packaging and insulating material. The same qualities that make it extremely useful also make it challenging to recycle: it consists of about 90% air, which means that discarded polystyrene can easily blow away in the wind, is therefore difficult to collect; and because it is bulky it is expensive to transport. Used polystyrene items that become part of the waste stream are usually compacted into more manageable smaller volumes.
